It's My Party and I'll Cry If I Want To

It’s My Party and I’ll Cry If I Want To

Some of you may be too young to remember that song from the ‘60’s. It was a big hit at the time. I just paraphrase it to “It’s my birthday and I’ll cry if I want to.” For those curious minds out there, I have not hit the big “50” yet and if you thought so, you will be eliminated from this list immediately after this e-mail self-destructs in the next thirty seconds.

For the most part, it was a day like any other with the exception of getting more well wishes then normal. Last week, I was on ICQ.com, which is like a giant Yahoo site. I did a search of Gay and Hungary and found a Cuban man who has been living here for the last nine years. I wrote to him and told him about Ron and I living here and looking for friends. After e-mailing back and forth a couple of times, we decided to meet for coffee. Later in the day, we had our first meeting and he arrived with his friend. The four of us started in on conversation like we had known each other for years and were getting together again after a short absence.

Fernando escaped from Communist Cuba the first time to come to Hungary to go to college, and then was forced to return to Cuba. After four years, he was able to return here, by marrying a Hungarian woman. She knowing his situation and not caring to ever marry for the usual reasons, decided to assist him in this way to escape Cuba for the last time. Both he and his Hungarian friend speak Spanish, Hungarian, and English fluently. Fernando works for IBM, here in Budapest and his friend is still a student.

We went to one of our favorite cafés for coffee and talked for over an hour non-stop, then walked the area and talked some more. We invited them back to our apartment for more coffee and we sat around and continued our conversation for another two hours. I think we have a potential friendship with the two of them and it was a great start. They had no idea it was my birthday, but for me it was a really nice little celebration.

Tomorrow, we leave on our trip.
