Looking for Palma Ann Case! Have You Seen This Woman?

Have you ever lost someone? I don't mean while at the mall or at the concert hall. I mean really lose them like for over twenty years? Well, I have lost a cousin. She and I were extremely close for a number of years, but her first husband managed to drive a wedge between us that took decades to heal for me, but I have been trying to track her down for the last few years.

I don't know if they still do this, but there used to be missing children's photos on milk cartons to broaden a search. If you have seen this child, please notify authorities.

Since I don't have access to American milk cartons and let's face it, my cousin is not a kid any longer, this is my plan B to find her.

I do know she has a Marriage Family Therapist license in CA. I did find her name pop up with a search of the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences, since I am there also as an LCSW. She is listed as being with a practice in Southern California. Using this information, I sent her a copy of my latest book, but used my good friend Daphnee's return address, just in case. I didn't think anyone would ever see the book again if I put Hungary down. The book was returned "Addressee Unknown".

After using all types of people finders on the Internet, I was not getting anywhere closer to a score. Then I had a brainstorm. Googling her name, I found photos on the web. Yet, as certain as I was that I recognized the face as well as my own, I was still leery as to whether I was right or not. You see, I could have been wrong about the blonde being Palma, in this photo.
The blonde is who I am looking for

But then I found my aunt's picture. I found Aunt Lena on a site called SlowTrav where it seems my cousin, Aunt Lena's daughter, has been blogging her trips for a number of years. That was proof positive that this was indeed the Palma I was hunting for. Aunt Lena was my maternal grandfather's youngest sibling.
Aunt Lena

If those two photos did not seal the deal, there was no doubt in my mind after I read some of the blog. My cousin, in the years that we shared, was an extraordinary cook and entertainer. When I saw pictures of intricate dishes that claimed credit for, I knew without a doubt this was my Palma. She has a flair with food that most caterers would admire and party planners would envy. She is THAT good.
Palma Ann Case

However, in order to connect with someone who may know her, who will tell her she is being sought out, I will add a couple more photos just to be sure. This one to the right is her profile picture from SlowTrav. When I read the profile, there was no longer a bit of doubt.

You know the expression "some things never change"? This applies here too. These photos brought a touch of nostalgia with them. What memories the inspire, though it seems they are not just memories for Palma. From reading, this must be her second husband. I never met him. See those shopping bags. I can guarantee you none of them are there because of Brad's shopping impulses. Palma treats shopping like an extreme sport. This is her Christmas motto, but without the reindeer names, it really applies all year round.

So, if you see this woman, know this woman, or belong to the SlowTrav website, please tell her her long lost cousin is writing a non-fiction book and she is a major player in it. You can send her this post by using the SHARE button.

She can send me a note through the comment section of this blog or to drryanjames@gmail.com.

Who?

I just spent two hours at a cafe with a wonderful student who I am the thesis adviser. I love the graphics at this place. I had to share a small part of one. I always feel like this is a wise choice.

I thought this idea was clever. It is difficult to see well with the graphics in the background, but their are origami birds in this birdcage. No mess, no cleanup and no worry about changing the water.

Can't Decide

I cannot decide on a title for this photo. It is either:

1. The other girls would not let Sakura into their group because she dressed funny.
or
2. The Hungarian Hen party was deciding which bar to blow into next.

Budget Budapest Airline Links

I had been grieving over no longer having the 20+ budget airlines we had at one time. At the time I needed an Excel program to keep track of them all and where they flew. We really did a lot of traveling for basically nothing back then. Those were the days, but there are some rays of sunshine on the horizon at least while we have sunshiny days ahead. Some of these routes are for summer only, so book early and make sure you are within the zone.

The Air France-KLM group created a budget offspring called Transavia. For Budapest travelers it flies to Amsterdam four times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday using the new Boeing 737-700 aircraft. Of course it has other routes, but you have to go to Amsterdam first. KLM flies 3 times daily from Bud to AMS.

Wizz Air, who successfully pushed SkyEurope out of the sky, leaves Budapest for 34 destinations and has just announced a new one to Larnaca, Cyprus. This destination is only 2 times a week. Wizz Air has begun 2 weekly flights to Dortmund, Germany Wizz Air now boasts the largest fleet at Budapest Liszt Ferenc with its new 6th Airbus A320.

SmartWings used to fly from Budapest to Prague, but quit the route. It seems this low-cost airline has decided to give it a chance yet again, but with a difference. Instead of heading to Prague, there are offering six weekly flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle and later in April, Barcelona will be added on with twice weekly flights. Additionally, for those of you who trust charted flights to be reliable, SmartWings is scheduling weekly summer time (through June) only flights to popular Greek and Bulgarian holiday destinations: Heraklion, Burgas, Zakinthos, Corfu and Rhodes.

Jet2com is adding Leeds Bradford in the UK to their Budapest services. They started with flights between Budapest and Manchester, but then added Edinburgh over a year ago. This will make destination number 3. Way to go Jet2com. Aegean now operates flights four times weekly to Athens.

A seasonal airBaltic flight between Riga and Budapest has started once more. They will fly Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday until October 26th. Depart Budapest at 14:15 to arrive in Riga at 17:30. Coming back, depart Riga at 11:55 to arrive in Budapest at 13:15. Originally operated during the summer of 2011, its popularity has brought it back for another summer encore.

Air Berlin is stepping up once again with daily service to Berlin with 11 flights weekly.
Travel plans starting in June. Consider Volotea who will provide three weekly flights to Venice starting June 1st. The day after, Blue1 will operate 2 flights a week to Helsinki, Finland.

After April 19th, Tarom will up their number of flights to 3 times a week heading to Bucharest. TAP is increasing their Lisbon flights from 7 to 8 a week. Not to be outdone, Lufthansa has announced their increase in capacity as well as new flights to Hamburg and Berlin.

The best news of all just may be that Ryanair announced it will return to Budapest to initiate services to 31 European cities.

Despite the demise of Malev the Hungarian national airline, Budapest Airport is going to be enjoying a successful 2012. This summer the airport will host 36 airlines, compared to just 33 last year, with almost the same number of destinations. Come fly with me.

Happy Spring Sunday

I don't celebrate Easter, but let me wish those of you who do, a most "Happy Easter". As I was thinking about this post, I came across a photo I took last Easter in front of St. Stephens Basilica here in Budapest. According to the caption, it was after masses were over. I had titled it "Easter Parade".

For those who are more modern traditionalists, I offer another photo. Notice as the idiom states, I don't put all of my eggs in one basket. Let that be your Easter reminder of wise sayings. Up until we left the US, I still colored Easter eggs each year, nurturing the child within.

I hope the Easter Bunny finds you no matter where you happen to be. Note to E.B.: I prefer white chocolate.

All in a Day's Grief

We have been working like plow horses trying to get as much done at the apartment before our tenant returns on Monday. It is unbelievable how much work there is to do with an apartment that was in great shape to begin with.

Now that it is all painted, almost completely furnished, it was time to put in the add-ons. We ordered custom vertical blinds for the kitchen window. When the painters were there on Monday, they were going to install them for us, but there is metal where the brackets have to go; their drill was not strong enough. They are coming back Thursday.

In the meanwhile, there are other things that need to be drilled, so I convinced Ron we need to butch up and buy a drill. I was feeling a cross between Bob the Builder and Tim the Tool Man Tailor. While Ron worked on other projects, I went to the hardware store with my list of translations for drill bit, steel, concrete, and power drill. I also brought a molly bolt so I could show the size bits needed. The only thing missing was a pair of construction boots, a tool belt, and a hard hat. This was so out of character, but I am a Capricorn; they are good actors. I knew I could pull it off.

When I returned with the drill, the damn thing still wouldn't touch the metal hidden by layers of paint. To add insult to injury, holding the bracket in place, the vertical blinds were too short. They looked like  a bad case of highwaters. This would never do. We thought about our options: Chuck the whole thing and start again. Try to bring it back to say they made a mistake (they did order the wrong size in both length and width), or return to curtains. Trying to convince the store they made the mistake would be Mission Impossible. No one spoke English so we went by pictures with lots of measurements. The young woman who took the order didn't seem to know how to fill out the forms, so needed assistance from an older colleague. Plus, you only have 3 days for returns and I am not even sure that counts with custom made things.

We moved on to the bedroom where we were going to hang the decorated shades before the custom-made curtains arrive. We are just not made for handling power tools, but after a "bit" Ron did an exemplary job. It only took 1 hour to put up one shade, so the other one goes up today.

Mac Attack

There has been a Mac Attack, but it has nothing to do with McDonalds. Secretly and selfishly, it is what I have been waiting for for a very long time. Mac computers have been attacked with a virus.

Why does this make me so gleeful?  For years, every Mac owner I knew had this pompous attitude that Macs were indestructible, no virus could penetrate their system. What had been pointed out to these people as well as all Mac owners was the truth of the matter was Macs sales were not significant enough to bother configuring a virus for them.

Now that Apple products are developing their own golden arches in sales with iPads, iPhones, iThis and iThat making their stocks boom, they are also making them juicy prey for those vigilantes out there that love to attack and run. With Apple products all tethered to teach other, it won't be long before one virus on the Mac is transferred across the board to all other iStuff.

In the US alone, there have been hundreds of thousands of Macs attacked with the Flashback Trojan. Read more here. Is it called Flashback as in "Gee, we should have done this before now."

Decorating Is So Much Work, But I Want Overtime

Our tenant, Jeff is in the US for spring break. We are taking this time to get work done on the apartment. This is the week so far of my "vacation".
  • Sunday, we went to the apartment to pull out all of the hooks and molly bolts from the wall, plastering the holes left behind.
  • Monday morning, I had to be there for the painters. They arrived earlier than expected. They were due at 8:45, but were there by 8:20 when I arrived. The painted the bedroom walls, living room walls, and kitchen walls and ceiling. They cleaned up everything, including sweeping the floor afterward. They were finished by 6:10 pm eating their lunch as they worked. I waited with them the entire day. They were going to hang the vertical blinds we bought for the kitchen, but they didn't have the right drill for the job. They offered to return to finish the job. My day was productive. We have WiFi there so I brought my laptop to read and grade papers.

  • Tuesday, Ron and I went shopping again. After looking at other stores, there was nothing really appealing for a desk, bedside table, or dresser. We found all three that worked perfectly while at Ikea, but the bedside table was out of stock. The only store that has it requires a car to get to. More stock comes in April 16th, so that means another trip. We bought those things and about a dozen other things. Now that there is some furniture, I am able to see what decorative touches are needed. I took all that could be carried over to the apartment to put them out. I didn't get home until 6:30. Ikea arranged to deliver the big things Wednesday morning and then their carpenter was arranged to do the assembly.

  • Today, Ikea delivered the furniture and assembled it. As promised they arrived between 9am-1pm with the carpenter on their heels to do the construction. Ron said he would go apartment sit, which was fortunate; I read and graded papers all morning.

  • This afternoon, I went over to the apartment to set some books on the bookcases to assist Ron is hanging a couple of wall hangings and some pictures we bought in Guatemala. The place is really shaping up. I am lov'in it.

This child's grandmother said that he will not put my book down. He wants to look through Frommer's Budapest & the Best of Hungary continually. She cannot understand why, since there are no pictures; being 2 1/2 he is not able to read yet. The obvious reason is that the child has excellent taste; no other reason is needed. End of story!

Presidential Foul Play

Hungarian President Pál Schmitt resigned on April 2nd. He was going to do it on April 1st and then say it was an April Fool's joke. Oh my stars, the man is still blaming other people to the bitter end. He claimed the dissertation supervisors should have uncovered his illegal behavior at the time it was happening. He may be partly correct with this. They should have been highly suspicious that a jock could write a 215 page dissertation without 3 lifelines.

Come on, the Cold War was over in 1992 when he submitted his dissertation, but apparently not enough years have passed for ethics to sink in. What is especially appalling is how we stress the importance of not plagiarizing to our students, by all of the faculty, yet the President of Hungary still tries to place blame elsewhere. Does he have no dignity at all? I would be less abhorrent if he just admitted he couldn't write a dissertation and moved on.

This is like saying the victim I robbed was wrong at the time since he never caught me in the act. The stupid fool allowed me to steal from him.

Students be aware. The plagiarism spies are out to hunt you down now, before you point fingers at us later.

Hungarian Secret Service

In my Caboodle newsletter, there was this item "Foreign Ministry launches bilingual consular service info site" which sounded promising as a source of information to keep on hand for sharing in the future. The words "The site" are hyperlinked, giving me a logical reason to believe it would take me to this new info site where I could read more. The link is no good and leads to a dead end only. When I tried Googling it, all links lead back to Caboodle. I thought that if I clicked on their source, MTI, I would at least get it in Hungarian where I could figure out a link. Nope! That just leads to more Caboodle articles.

Finally I this site, but it is nothing new. So it seems for now that Caboodle is part of the Hungarian Secret Services division.

Breaker, Breaker, Copy That

Pál Schmitt, Hungarian politician in a meeting...
If you ever watch any police shows or military movies, you know the expression "Copy that".

Well in Hungary these days, it has all new meaning. The Hungarian President's had someone blow the whistle stating he plagiarized his doctoral dissertation. I have been reading the news translated from Hungarian to English, regarding the fall out over this, but a former student, Andrea sent me this link to an article in The Economist. Click here to read it.This is an earlier picture; he is not smiling so much these days.

For gosh sakes, the man's doctorate is in physical education. It would make sense that he copied 17 pages verbatim from another person's work. We all know how jocks are about not doing academic work. Well to add insult to injury another 180 pages were 'borrowed' from the work of a Bulgarian sports historian. It makes me wonder if Mr. Schmitt's completed work was much more than 197 pages. Well, perhaps 200 when you add the title page, table of contents and acknowledgements. I guess, that last page didn't exist for obvious reasons.

The Economist reports that the supervisory committee has stated that the blame should be placed on Mr. Schmitt's doctoral committee "who did not do their jobs properly". This is a typical reaction of pointing the finger, not realizing there are four others pointing back. Why should a student do their job properly in the first place without having to be suspect?

Semmelweis University, the institution that is now the overseer for the physical education degrees, pulled the doctorate from Mr. Schmitt. While all political parties are in agreement on one thing, Schmitt should resign, Prime Minister Orbán is allowing him to make his own decision.

Quoting The Economist "Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s prime minister, promised last year that the era of the cosy insider was over. 'Our homeland will no longer be a country without consequences'”.

The irony of it all is the increased security we have implemented against plagiarism at the university a year ago. If we find a student in this situation, the consequences are dire. What is the definition for hypocrisy?

Nigel Made Me Laugh Out Loud

My friend Nigel, commented on the post with the readers with this comment: "If they were in Budapest it must be Orban Victors new book "Silence of the Lambs"".

I read it on my phone as I was walking home from school and laughed out loud. All the way home, I kept chuckling like the town idiot, but it was fun to have a good laugh. Thanks Nigel!

Literary Protest?

I was down at Deák yesterday when I ran into this literary sit-in. All of these people were reading books. They seemingly ignored anyone who approached them with questions and few were speaking among themselves. I am clueless what was happening so if anyone knows, please share. Darn it if I hadn't just finished the book I had in my bag or I would have joined them.

A Double Scoop of Chocolate Hazelnut Faggy, Please

When we first moved here, I noticed this word all around the city. I thought either this is a great city for gays or they are purposefully being derogatory and posting it on a tremendous number of buildings, signs, and in store fronts.  It was so close to fag, faggy, faggot, there had to be a relation.

Still, I cannot look at this word without smiling at my preconceived notions. This is another lick-able, likeable treat that also comes in a number of colors and flavors. It is ice cream.
