E is for Exhausted, but V is for Victory

Quite honestly, I really did not expect President Obama to win. The Republicans had billions more in their Super PACS with heavy hitters like Donald Trump tossing money into the campaign chest. All polls showed a neck and neck race, so this forced me think about the emotional impact of having a Mormon for president. It shocked me that others did not consider this since it was such an issue with John Kennedy being Catholic.

We had registered for the American Chamber of Commerce Budapest Election Night Gala. This was to be our third since living in Hungary. There was a great deal of anxiety thinking we would be out-numbered by bullying Republicans who would be caustic as they were our first election here for Bush and Kerry. If I were still a nail biter, I would have indulged big time, chewing right up to my wrist. Even buying a pack of cigarettes fleeted through my mind. Admittedly, Obama did not do all that I had hoped his first term, but then again, I realize that due to the balance of power, the Republicans control of one house in Congress, creates a roadblock.

The Corinthia Grand Hotel, did a superior job once again hosting the event. The decorations were lovely, the atmosphere was grand, but most of all the staff made the entire experience a delight.

Wine flowed freely, there were coupons for Jack Daniels drinks and Starbucks coffee.
Table upon table was filled with food from room to room, so no one had to venture too far to get goodies to fill up on. As we walked around from room to room, there was this display of the Oval Office. OMG, could I really envision the guy on the right sitting at the desk? Hell, NO! He had to go!Being wisely placed along side of Reagan was a smart idea to bring about a comparison.

Even some of the desserts were festive. There were two tables with cupcakes forming a US flag. They were mostly left untouched due to the wide assortment of other desserts being offered.

Though the roar of the crowd did not allow for anyone to hear the extra large screen televisions, there was nothing to watch until after midnight due to there being six hours time difference from the east coast. The event was scheduled to go until 4am, but we did not leave until 5:30. Obama was in the lead, but some of the big states were still not being called. Nevada, Florida, and Ohio were too close yet.

We were home in minutes. I thought I would go to bed since I had to teach at 11am, but I could not stand the suspense. Glad I did! Around 6:20am CNN projected Obama as the winner, much to the chagrin of the Republican B and B guest we have with us. He got up to watch the coverage also. After I was certain of the outcome, I went to bed to get some z's before going to class.

US Embassy Adopts Hungarian Ways

Years ago when I went to the Király thermals, I used to laugh at the system they had. Once in the door, you bought a ticket. You then walked five feet where another woman is sitting at a table with more tickets spread before her like she is going to read your fortune. She would reach for your freshly purchased entry slip and with a look of boredom that could make Medusa envious, she ripped it in half.
If you had any delusions you were now ready for the waters, you were mistaken. She handed over yet another ticket, but if you looked uninitiated, she would point you in the direction of the stairs.

At the top of the stairs, if you were lucky enough to enter without waiting for a locker to free up, an attendant would take your ticket, hand you a towel and tell you to wait in place. Coming around the corner, there would be yet another attendant who came to escort you to a freed up locker and hand you your key. Much has changed at the thermals over the years.

Today, Ron and I had to go to the US Embassy to get our new passports. I hate having to do this so soon; ours do not expire until May 2013. However, we are going to Ecuador over the holidays and Ecuador requires that your passport be good for up to six months when leaving the country. The math did not jive.

Admittedly, US Citizen Services did answer my e-mails speedily. They have all the forms needed online and they can be filled in online also. When you print them, they were ready to go. There is also an appointment program online making it quick and easy. We had gone to the 'authorized' photographer for our required 2x2 inch photos. Our entire Hungarian photo needs have been taken care of at photo booths in the metro stations at significantly less cost. Two days before, they sent me a reminder of the appointment, all the directions were reiterated, and we were ready to go.

I was so nervous about being late and then rejected for our appointment, we were 20 minutes early. The process is more extensive now that security has been beefed up worldwide. When we finally entered, we were the only ones there. No one was waiting. We had an appointment, but still had to take a number to wait, and wait, and wait. I could see employees standing around talking, looking rather casual with coffee cups in hand. Why are we waiting when we are the only ones needing assistance? Is this a punishment for being early?
Ten minutes later our number was called. We turned in our paperwork. The woman seemed impressed and pleased we were completely prepared. She was indeed very professional, even if we had to wait. Once she did her part of this passport process; I wanted to hand over the $220 for our two passports and be out of there. That was not about to happen.

“Now hold on to your number and we will call you again to window 7, where you can pay the cashier” she directed. Window 7 had the blinds down. No one was home. It was now past 8:30 so why wasn’t anyone working. Did they go to refill their coffee cup? Are they checking Facebook? What is more important than collecting our US dollars? Still by this time, there was only one other person in the entire waiting area. He looked like he was ready for the long haul of waiting. Finally, he was called to a different window from any we had been to, so he much not be an American.

Number 502 appears on the board directing us to window 7. The blinds go up and there is a young blonde man there. “Hello, are you paying in cash? It will be $110 American or…” I did not give him a chance to finish as I held the wad of greenbacks to display them through the glass and his vision. “I am paying for two people” I remind him and turn over $220. He disappears for a minute, returns and tells me to hold on to my number. They will call me again to the other window to pick up the old passports and the receipt for today’s payment.

Why couldn’t the original woman do all of this? They certainly are not interested in moving people out very quickly with this system. It would behoove them for security reasons to keep the less number of people in the building as possible. If for some reason the woman cannot take the cash, the cashier should be there at the ready to collect the money, hand over the passports and the receipt.

In one week, one of us has to return to collect the new books, where they will fill the old ones full of holes making them sad looking.
With the new books in hand, we will have to return to the Hungarian Immigration Office to have our Residency stickers transferred to the new books. Another chore I am not looking forward to doing.

Your Rape Was a Gift from God...

Remember - Democrats vote on Tuesday. Republicans vote on Wednesday. If you are mailing in your ballots, only Democrats need to affix postage. Republicans can send it in without any postage at all.

Festive Autumn Windows

Our coleus finally gave out with the sudden cold temperatures. Ron did his window decorating for the fall. After Thanksgiving, the winter penguins will make they way out to grace the balcony walkway until we return in mid-January.

Only six more weeks until we leave? Good grief, time evaporates unless I am grading essays.

New Ride on Metro 2

Well, I have been waiting for this since we first saw the test train zip past us in the station months ago. Ron and I went to Tesco today to start hunting down Thanksgiving food items when lo and behold, the new metro train appeared in the station. At first, I thought it may have been another test run because guards were stationed along the platform. When we saw passengers sitting inside, we hopped in too. They are great. Let's hope they stay this way for some time.

Obama Does Right By New Jersey

I have not written much about the elections this year as I have in elections past. However, after Hurricane Sandy has practically destroyed my home State of New Jersey, I feel urgently prompted to speak up.

New Jersey has 127 miles of beaches. Most of my formative years were spent at the beach in Long Branch. Having been born a few blocks from the ocean, and then living my first 16 years just blocks from there, an abundance of memories swirl through my mind. As a child, my kindergarten was across the street from the ocean. My elementary school was two blocks from the ocean. The beach is where I collected seashells, started working from 13 years old, and received my first kiss from someone who I was not related to. My family lived only blocks from the beach. The ocean, beach and boardwalk are all part of my identity. They all shaped bits of who I am.

Most people who know Bruce Springstein, know Asbury Park, NJ. This is the sister city of Long Branch as it is only 7 miles down the shoreline.

Most of the Jersey shore is now in shambles. Hurricane Sandy made toothpicks from planks of wood that was once the boardwalk. There were photos of roller coasters swimming in the sea. So many hurricanes in the past have destroyed the boardwalk. They have been rebuilt time and again, but each time at a tremendous expense.

President Obama toured the Jersey shore with Governor Christie to assess the damage and offer financial assistance for recovery. Obama is able to provide services that are needed by the people who have had devastation.

Romney's campaign has tried pulling a few politico moves. First of all they have asked people to donated canned goods and clothes to the Red Cross for those in need.  This sounds reasonably charitable. However, they continued to solicit these items even after the Red Cross asked them to stop. The Red Cross asked for money donations in lieu of canned food and clothes for the simple reason that these would require person power to sort and distribute. Whereas if money were donated, they could buy what was needed for expedited distribution.

The other Romney "pull the wool over your eyes" attempt was really slick. The Republican campaign bought $5,000 worth of food and provided it for people to pick up, but not for themselves, but to donate to the Red Cross.  This was to make the Romney relief effort look like a success whether it would have been otherwise or not. Read it for yourself here. If you read the article below, the Red Cross had to divert person-power from their real relief efforts to deal with Romney's stunt.

Obama may not have completed all that he promised during the last election, but Americans always forget, the balance of power in our system. All candidates can promise whatever they think the public wants to hear, but it takes Congress to make it into law. Obama has not had it easy with the right wing Republicans who refuse to work across the aisle, but instead want to be kings of their own pile of power, without regard to the good of the masses.

I am proud to say that I voted for Obama. I am proud to say that I voted in the State of New Jersey.

New Jersey food drive here.
