Nieces Leave

The ladies leave Edinburgh today for Dublin. Their luggage arrived this morning and both of their bags were soaking wet inside and out. All of their dry clean clothes were ruined and some color ran, so white shorts were now tie-died. Writing this in retrospect, I have no idea what we did today, though I do remember hanging out at the hostel with them while they ran the rest of their clothes in the dryer. They wanted food, and Pizza Hut food was the order of the day. They finally took off for the airport at 2:00 pm and we did something. When I download the pictures, I might be able to say what it was.

Fringe With the Nieces

We had a dance performance today called "Danceforms: The 37th International Choreographers' Showcase". We paid 9 pounds each on a 2 for 1, but went last year and loved it. The show was 2 hours. There were about 12 different performers, solos and small groups. There were a couple of excellent pieces, one in particular was the Black Eagle, a solo woman in tons of black chiffon or netting.

Ron and I went down to the 1/2 price ticket office to see what was offered. I spotted a guy giving away free tickets and sent Ron over. He returned with four, but we needed to buy another. I strolled around and then honed in on the guy and requested a ticket. He said "Aren't you with that guy over there?" Without looking at where he pointed, I said "No, I am with someone else." He was so confused, he gave me a free ticket.

When we went to round up the girls, like herding cats, Nicole was not feeling well and begged off. I lied for a free ticket for nothing, but I would have been really upset if we have paid for it. The show was "Just So!" based on Kipling's book of the same name. I was a little concerned that these college graduates would think it was lame, but they loved it and told Nicole what a good show she missed out on.

We went to grab something to eat and then decided we all wanted to see "Puppetry of the Penis". It is amazing that these guys have been doing this show for seven years and are still packing them in. They are earning money for things that most boys experiment with during their youthful years. Wow!

The show ended after 11:30 pm, so we headed home to catch the last bus. They stayed for another show.

Back to Fringe

Ron's niece Elise and her friends Nicole and Katie met up with us here in Edinburgh. Elise and Nicole are on a whirlwind tour of Europe, having just graduated from college. They arrived here today and we arranged to meet them at the hostel at 8:00 pm. We took a day trip to Cramond. When I see the pictures, I will remember what we saw. : ) When we did meet up with them, they were already surrounded by seven Italian young men, only one of whom spoke English. It was apparent we were in the way, though the young ladies did ask us to join them and their new friends. I don't think so. Katie and Nicole's luggage was lost by the airline. They were not happy campers.

Earl Arriives

Our friend Earl arrived from California today. There were real mixed emotions about his coming. He was carting a ton of things that I had ordered over the Internet and had sent to his house: three pairs of Crocs, a bathrobe, and MS Office 2007. Then there were things I needed him to buy like real vanilla, chocolate chips, and brown gravy mix. He haunted me repeatedly to meet him at the airport, but I held fast and refused each time. This is his third trip here and I met him both times before. It takes me an hour to get there by public transport and then I have to pay my way back by shuttle. As it was, his plane was 2 hours late, so I would have been sitting there wasting time and seething. Earl is the only one who comes here more than once and now stays for free. There is a long complicated history here and this is the only reason. His partner refuses to travel with him and this is his only opportunity to get out of the country. He is not confident (scared to death) to travel alone. He is also agreeable to do our banking in CA when needed, so there is another trade-off. When he arrived, I must admit, I was most anxious to see his luggage. I attacked it like a young child on Christmas morning. This evening, we went to the Iguana to say good-bye to Nicole and Lynn. They are both Fulbrighters who are returning to the States. Nicole leaves tomorrow morning. Lynn first goes to London for a few days and then returns to leave, but we will be in Rome. We only stayed for an hour, knowing Earl would be tired, but with Chris, Mark, and Nicole's friend Adam there too, the table was large and made it difficult to hear to carry on a discussion.
