Interesting Tidbits

Each weekday, I get a digest of Hungarian news translated to English by All Hungary Media Group. Sometimes the contradictions of what is in the new is laughable. Yes, I do read some US news online too, but they just have not gotten the knack of compiling it as humorously.

Californian Hungarian winemaker revealed as owner of far-right website kuruc.info

A Hungarian winemaker living in California has been identified by a Hungarian whistleblower website as the owner of the far-right news site kuruc.info, according to an article posted on atlatszo.hu on Tuesday.

These two however, make me scratch my head in wonderment.

Civil effort underway to launch new Hungarian national air carrier
Hungary’s Civil Society for the Establishment of a New Hungarian Airline hopes to wind up talks with Asian, Arab and European investors and lenders by December, Peter Leavai, who heads the initiative that seeks to replace failed national carrier Malev, told hvg.hu...

The airline, dubbed Hungarian World Airways, is expected to carry 10m passengers in its first year, generating USD 9bn, hvg.hu said. It targets profit of USD 260m by its third year, the website of business weekly HVG added.

The Daily, Huh?

When I first discovered there was a new English language news portal, I was thrilled for the variety. I readily embrace the snippets of news that arrive in my mailbox Monday to Friday by the All Hungary Group News, but there is just a smattering of news there. It is like an appetizer without an entrée.

The latest news source for we English speakers is The Daily.hu an online service only. With great relish, I started following this portal, but soon changed my habits from daily to weekly. This brings me to the conclusion that perhaps the moniker would be wisely re-branded as The Occasional.what?

After pointing my browser in the direction of the site, knowing I had lapsed as a dedicated reader for over two weeks, I intended to spend some quality time reading, gathering, learning, and being entertained. Much to my chagrin, the only emotion that reached a perfect 10 on my scale of fulfillment was disappointment. 

With the exception of a couple random smidgens of information about the Olympics and even less about the Sziget Festival, there was nothing new. Many articles are dated back to mid-July with less than a dozen exhibiting any date in August. 

Now one could assert that it is the summer, so things get lazy, including bloggers, so maybe we should cut some slack here and wait for cooler weather before we find cozy articles to snuggle up with. Normally, I would give the benefit of this argument, but the news portal was originated at the beginning of the summer. This has either been really poor planning or they don't aren't paying any staff so there is no incentive for anyone to bring the pen to the pad or the fingers to the keyboard. 

If anyone is paying attention, I have some very talented journalism students that will be looking for an internship.

All in One

In this age of technology, we can access more information in one day as opposed to what was possible in a year's time just a generation ago. Teaching university, I enjoy staying abreast of what is happening in technology and other areas, so I subscribe to different newsletters. However, I found one site that may rescue me from all of that. It is called Mashtop. Mashtop is an aggregation of other sites and stories, giving me a taste of what is available. If it is something that tickles my interest, I can read more. This is a great time saver, not having to page through long newsletters sifting out information. Because it has more than just technology, just about anyone will find something of interest. Check out Mashtop here.

Ron Arrived, I Guess

Late today, I received an e-mail from Ron's nephew stating he arrived safely. His nephew Glenn also included that his Internet connection was iffy at best. However, I am not sure what this had to do with Ron not sending a note himself. Alas, he made it safely, they let him into the country, and I can stop watching for new flashes or "BREAKING NEWS" on CNN and BBC. The cottonweed is flying through the city like a snowstorm. My allergies that CA doctors swear I do not have are making me miserable. Although news of Ron should allow me to get a good night's sleep, my sinuses have other ideas.
