Drive In and Sit a Spell

When I was a kid growing up in New Jersey, the Drive-in movies were the biggest treat for me. Of course, early one, we had a station wagon where the back seats were flipped down. There were lots of pillows and blankets there. Under the big screen there was a petting zoo and playground. Whoever owned this outdoor theater in Eatontown, NJ had a smart marketing idea.

Once the movie started, I was curled up in blankets out like a light while my parents enjoyed the movies in peace. They had double features back then. In later years, I did enjoy the shows. Going to the snack bar for theater food was a different treat.

The reason I bring all of this up is because Google Doodles is celebrating with an animated tribute to the first drive-in movie theater, which was opened in New Jersey on June 6, 1933. It was a long time thereafter before I made my appearance on the scene, so they had decades to perfect the technology before my child hood ever kicked into gear. You can watch it here.

Louis Daguerre

As an avid photographer, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the Google Doodle for today. It is the 224th birthday of Louis Daguerre. This is the physicist who is the pioneer of photography. The daguerreotype play (French: daguerréotype) was the first commercially successful photographic process. The image is a direct positive made in the camera on a silvered copper plate.

Orange You Glad I Am Celebrating a Hungarian?

Google Doodles are country based much of the time, so may of you may not even get to enjoy this one. Orange you glad I am here to share it? (Yes, linguists, that was a play on words).


Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 118th birthday of Hungarian scientist and Nobel prize winner Albert Szent-Györgyi, who is credited with discovering vitamin C. 


The colorful doodle abounds in oranges and strawberries both of which are abundantly rich in Vitamin C. However Szent-Györgyi was known to have used paprika in his experiments, which led to the discovery of Vitamin C. Szent-Györgyi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937 “for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion process with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid”.

Google Doodles

Last month Google had a few of their innovative doodles displaying their logo in commemoration of particular people or events. The doodles differ depending on the country or region, but some are global. Here in March, there was the Houdini doodle celebrating the anniversary of his birth. I let that one disappear without notice. Next still in March was a doodle celebrating Robert Bunsen, the inventor of the Bunsen burner. Each time I opened Google, my computer overheated, so that one was ignored.


Today, however, Google has outdone themselves with the ultimate doodle that unravels memories that have been tangled in the deep dark spiderwebs of my subconscious. You will see it at the bottom, but to avoid the suspense, it is the 119th anniversary of the ice cream sundae.
