Obama Does Right By New Jersey

I have not written much about the elections this year as I have in elections past. However, after Hurricane Sandy has practically destroyed my home State of New Jersey, I feel urgently prompted to speak up.

New Jersey has 127 miles of beaches. Most of my formative years were spent at the beach in Long Branch. Having been born a few blocks from the ocean, and then living my first 16 years just blocks from there, an abundance of memories swirl through my mind. As a child, my kindergarten was across the street from the ocean. My elementary school was two blocks from the ocean. The beach is where I collected seashells, started working from 13 years old, and received my first kiss from someone who I was not related to. My family lived only blocks from the beach. The ocean, beach and boardwalk are all part of my identity. They all shaped bits of who I am.

Most people who know Bruce Springstein, know Asbury Park, NJ. This is the sister city of Long Branch as it is only 7 miles down the shoreline.

Most of the Jersey shore is now in shambles. Hurricane Sandy made toothpicks from planks of wood that was once the boardwalk. There were photos of roller coasters swimming in the sea. So many hurricanes in the past have destroyed the boardwalk. They have been rebuilt time and again, but each time at a tremendous expense.

President Obama toured the Jersey shore with Governor Christie to assess the damage and offer financial assistance for recovery. Obama is able to provide services that are needed by the people who have had devastation.

Romney's campaign has tried pulling a few politico moves. First of all they have asked people to donated canned goods and clothes to the Red Cross for those in need.  This sounds reasonably charitable. However, they continued to solicit these items even after the Red Cross asked them to stop. The Red Cross asked for money donations in lieu of canned food and clothes for the simple reason that these would require person power to sort and distribute. Whereas if money were donated, they could buy what was needed for expedited distribution.

The other Romney "pull the wool over your eyes" attempt was really slick. The Republican campaign bought $5,000 worth of food and provided it for people to pick up, but not for themselves, but to donate to the Red Cross.  This was to make the Romney relief effort look like a success whether it would have been otherwise or not. Read it for yourself here. If you read the article below, the Red Cross had to divert person-power from their real relief efforts to deal with Romney's stunt.

Obama may not have completed all that he promised during the last election, but Americans always forget, the balance of power in our system. All candidates can promise whatever they think the public wants to hear, but it takes Congress to make it into law. Obama has not had it easy with the right wing Republicans who refuse to work across the aisle, but instead want to be kings of their own pile of power, without regard to the good of the masses.

I am proud to say that I voted for Obama. I am proud to say that I voted in the State of New Jersey.

US Health Care Reform

I am not living in the US, but I have e-mailed my Congress people to stand behind Obama in creating reforms to our broken health care system. I do not want to see another failure that Clinton faced. Health care is getting increasing worse in the US according to all of my friends who live there, regardless of how deep their pockets are. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/19/AR2009071901465.html?nav%3Drss_email/componentul%202009http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/contenhttp://www.washingtonpost.com:80/ac2/wp-dyn?node=admin/registraM%C3%A1%E2%82%AC&sub=AR

The Onion Reports on the Campaign

This video comes from The Onion. My former co-teacher used to read it compulsively, but I never really appreciated the humor. It is all satire. Ron came across this video, which did tickle my funny bone. It is making me wonder if I should removed my Obama-Biden button from my jacket. I am so proud to be an American again, I hate to remove it. Obama Win Causes Obsessive Supporters To Realize How Empty Their Lives Are

Presidental Debate

It was not my intention to wake up for the first Presidential debate. I had planned to catch it in reruns or wait for the book to be released, and then a more entertaining movie that would surely follow. However, at 3:00 am, something woke me and I could not get back to sleep. I decided to watch it live. Although I thought Barack Obama looked, acted, and presented himself as presidential, I have to say I was disappointed with McCain's performance. The first question, the economy showed what many pundits have harped on for months; the economy is not his cup of tea. Rather than come forth with some critical thoughts that he should have garnered when he 'postponed' his campaign to return to Washington to fix the crisis, he floundered. What was all of the rhetoric about his flying to the capital to save the day, when he could not answer the question without pulling out old solutions and digging up Reagan's grave for answers to another failed economist. After watching the debate in its entirety, I spent another hour or so listening to the commentators' responses. It surprised me when some of the Republican panel members admitted that McCain's performance not only did not produce a slam dunk for him, it did not even make the waters warmer. Some Republican talk show host, whose name slips my early morning memory, said he was disappointed in the McC's answers and actually gave a great deal of credit to Obama for his responses. Score a big one for our side. The highlight for me was when Wolf Blitzer interviewed Joe Biden. When they were finished, Wolf said he would have loved to have had Sarah Palin on for equal time. Cooper Anderson who was present, loudly and clearly said "Don't hold your breathe on that one." I burst into laughter.

Putting My Body Where My Mouth Is

A couple of weeks ago, Democrats Abroad asked if we would volunteer for registering people to vote at the "Hungary for Obama" concert event. At the time it sounded like a great idea and we both said "Sure, why not?" We have both been volunteer registrars at other events with dismal results so a black cloud was floating over this idea once I said yes. To be supportive, we registered and bought a T-shirt with the "Hungary for Obama" logo on it for 3,500 Huf each. When 6:30 pm came around last night, I really did not want to drag myself out of the house to go to this event. It was held at the Merlin Theater, a venue that used to have many plays in English, but has since moved more toward German and Hungarian. In the past, we had season tickets, but had not been for over a year since there was nothing in a language we spoke. They spiffed up the place and it was looking mighty good. Merrill Oates, the organizer has a platoon of volunteers handling the shirt sales and distribution. His organizational skills would have made Amazon.com envious. The theater has a large restaurant on the second floor where the event started. Each table was embellished with a plate of sandwiches, Hungarian biscuits, cookies, and candles. Being an audio-visual techie, Merrill had slide shows going on both huge walls, while a bandstand was ready for the musical entertainment. This obviously was not a slapped together event and would have made any Democrat proud. The US Embassy sent a Hungarian employee from the Consular Service to assist us with registration. Since each state has its own rules and regulations of what information they require for a person to register, thick books were on the table for referencing each states requirements. Anyone who walked by us, we asked if they were registered. When we received numerous "I am already registered" responses, I was beginning to think this was another waste of time. However, after an hour into the event, we started getting people coming over to register. The Ohio, New Hampshire, Iowa, and Florida people especially made our hearts sing out with joy. One woman from Alaska came up to register too and shared her feelings about Palin reiterating all we have heard from the news and the YouTube video in this blog. What was especially exciting were the people who took up to ten applications each for friends who were not able to attend the event, but still wanted to get registered. The music was lovely with a band and a soulful singer. The lights were dimmed forcing us to have a secondary light source on our table for people to see, but it made for a dramatic event. We registered close to twenty-five people. The Embassy assistant had encyclopedic knowledge and was an excellent resource. We finally closed down by 10:30 pm, but the party was still going hot and heavy. The attendance approached 200 minimum by all who were counting, but as we were leaving, people were still arriving. As happens many times, I have reservations about commitments I make when the time approaches, but afterward, I leave with great satisfaction. Last night was a prime example.

Flashback to Saturday

Last Sunday, we went to welcome another American who has come here to live for a year. Michael has come to study at Central European University for a Masters in History. About six months prior to his arrival, he was given my e-mail address through a friend of a friend of a friend, that sort of thing that brings people into connecting. We had many e-mail exchanges about living here, the quality of life, and then much ado about his decision to earn another Masters degree here versus in the States. Many quandaries later I suggested he was earning me a Life Coach designation due to my mentoring and haranguing for his making a change in a life he claimed was not satisfactory. The kicker was that he too is an MSW; both Ron and I are social workers besides. During these e-mail exchanges, we discussed politics once. He was a strong Hillary supporter as was I and both of us were disappointed she did not make it to the top. It was not until he arrived that I found out much to my chagrin that he is now supporting McCain due to Palin. My initial reaction was to rip his skin off to see if it was masking a hostage Democrat under wraps, but I controlled myself. We have limited friends here, so we have to turn the other cheek at times as much as I would like to sock his when he makes a comment about how qualified Palin is in comparison to Obama-Biden. I have suggested we disassociate ourselves from political discussions or the seed of friendship is never going to sprout past to reach the top of the soil. We have done well thus far. Being new to the city, everything is exciting to Michael. We have been here seven years and though we still find it a beautiful urban area, we don't have the need or desire to go running about to museums and such unless there is a new and grabbing exhibit that demands to seen. Michael has time on his hands until school officially begins. His first week was orientation only. We decided to replace one sofa bed in the small bedroom while replacing the sofa in the large bedroom with a sofa bed. After more than one guest has broken the frame on the bed in the large room, we have also caved in and put a new bed frame on the shopping list. This meant a trip to Ikea; we invited Michael to join us. There is nothing that makes my blood circulate at premium efficiency than shopping. I love to shop, but when I know I am actually going to make purchases, I am like a greyhound chasing rabbits. It did not take long to find two different sofa beds that were on wheels, not sitting on the floor like our current model. Both had extremely comfortable mattresses; unlike many Ikea We stopped at the food court to lunch and refresh our spirits. Their meals are usually excellent and bargain prices. Their Swedish meatballs are my favorite. Along the way, going around Ikea is like following the yellow brick road. They were ingenious in setting the store up so you follow the path they want you to walk, most of the time, you ignore the detours through departments. That is how I found the most wonderful blankets. They are ivory color, look like bubble wrap, but are soft and squishy. Mental pictures of curling up with one on a cold winter's night while watching TV prompted me to buy one for us and one each for the bedrooms. How could I not share this cozy pleasure with guests? We also spotted some bolster type pillows for the small room's sofa bed to add some color completing our shopping tour. With bin numbers in hand, we grabbed a trolley and scavenged for the parts we would have to assemble to make our ideals a reality. Our trolley runneth over as we headed to the cashier and then to the delivery services. Feeling satiated, we left, I was in seventh heaven. I had not been able to shop until I was ready to drop in so long, I had fears that my stamina had run dry. The day was a success with no political talk, but good conversation and an exchange of ideas on other topics. There is hope. products the choice of colors was not obnoxious either. We also found a bed frame suitable for the over sized guest, which would not make our hearts palpitate with fear of finding them sleeping on the floor some morning. Just for good measure, we assured ourselves by finding out which parts were replaceable 'just in case'.

Take note that this whole piece that follows starting with the date, is a quotation. It is taken from the NY Times and placed here as copied and pasted. If you have never read Maureen Dowd, you are in for a treat. All I can add is YOU GO GIRL. You are hitting on the head. I just wish you could knock some heads. August 31, 2008

Vice in Go-Go Boots?

PITTSBURGH

The guilty pleasure I miss most when I’m out slogging on the campaign trail is the chance to sprawl on the chaise and watch a vacuously spunky and generically sassy chick flick.

So imagine my delight, my absolute astonishment, when the hokey chick flick came out on the trail, a Cinderella story so preposterous it’s hard to believe it’s not premiering on Lifetime. Instead of going home and watching “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, I get to stay here and watch “Miss Congeniality” with Sarah Palin.

Sheer heaven.

It’s easy to see where this movie is going. It begins, of course, with a cute, cool unknown from Alaska who has never even been on “Meet the Press” triumphing over a cute, cool unknowable from Hawaii who has been on “Meet the Press” a lot.

Americans, suspicious that the Obamas have benefited from affirmative action without being properly grateful, and skeptical that Michelle really likes “The Brady Bunch” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” reject the 47-year-old black contender as too uppity and untested.

Instead, they embrace 72-year-old John McCain and 44-year-old Sarah Palin, whose average age is 58, a mere two years older than the average age of the Obama-Biden ticket. Enthusiastic Republicans don’t see the choice of Palin as affirmative action, despite her thin résumé and gaping absence of foreign policy knowledge, because they expect Republicans to put an underqualified “babe,” as Rush Limbaugh calls her, on the ticket. They have a tradition of nominating fun, bantamweight cheerleaders from the West, like the previous Miss Congeniality types Dan Quayle and W., and then letting them learn on the job. So they crash into the globe a few times while they’re learning to drive, what’s the big deal?

Obama may have been president of The Harvard Law Review, but Palin graduated from the University of Idaho with a minor in poli-sci and worked briefly as a TV sports reporter. And she was tougher on the basketball court than the ethereal Obama, earning the nickname “Sarah Barracuda.”

The legacy of Geraldine Ferraro was supposed to be that no one would ever go on a blind date with history again. But that crazy maverick and gambler McCain does it, and conservatives and evangelicals rally around him in admiration of his refreshingly cynical choice of Sarah, an evangelical Protestant and anti-abortion crusader who became a hero when she decided to have her baby, who has Down syndrome, and when she urged schools to debate creationism as well as that stuffy old evolution thing.

Palinistas, as they are called, love Sarah’s spunky, relentlessly quirky “Northern Exposure” story from being a Miss Alaska runner-up, and winning Miss Congeniality, to being mayor and hockey mom in Wasilla, a rural Alaskan town of 6,715, to being governor for two years to being the first woman ever to run on a national Republican ticket. (Why do men only pick women as running mates when they need a Hail Mary pass? It’s a little insulting.)

Sarah is a zealot, but she’s a fun zealot. She has a beehive and sexy shoes, and the day she’s named she goes shopping with McCain in Ohio for a cheerleader outfit for her daughter.

As she once told Vogue, she’s learned the hard way to deal with press comments about her looks. “I wish they’d stick with the issues instead of discussing my black go-go boots,” she said. “A reporter once asked me about it during the campaign, and I assured him I was trying to be as frumpy as I could by wearing my hair on top of my head and these schoolmarm glasses.”

This chick flick, naturally, features a wild stroke of fate, when the two-year governor of an oversized igloo becomes commander in chief after the president-elect chokes on a pretzel on day one.

The movie ends with the former beauty queen shaking out her pinned-up hair, taking off her glasses, slipping on ruby red peep-toe platform heels that reveal a pink French-style pedicure, and facing down Vladimir Putin in an island in the Bering Strait. Putting away her breast pump, she points her rifle and informs him frostily that she has some expertise in Russia because it’s close to Alaska. “Back off, Commie dude,” she says. “I’m a much better shot than Cheney.”

Then she takes off in her seaplane and lands on the White House lawn, near the new ice fishing hole and hockey rink. The “First Dude,” as she calls the hunky Eskimo in the East Wing, waits on his snowmobile with the kids — Track (named after high school track meets), Bristol (after Bristol Bay where they did commercial fishing), Willow (after a community in Alaska), Piper (just a cool name) and Trig (Norse for “strength.”)

“The P.T.A. is great preparation for dealing with the K.G.B.,” President Palin murmurs to Todd, as they kiss in the final scene while she changes Trig’s diaper. “Now that Georgia’s safe, how ’bout I cook you up some caribou hot dogs and moose stew for dinner, babe?”

Laugh or Cry, Laugh or Cry?

Laugh or cry, that is the question now that McCain has chosen his VP. There are a three American B and B guests here when the announcement came in. Five of us in total were flabbergasted, but definitely not speechless. The way we questioned what was he thinking, you would have thought that we were Republicans who felt slighted by not being in the loop on what seems to be a moronic decision. Personally, I believe that Obama and Biden can make this work for them, if they are smart. If they don't I will have lost all hope for American politics. Let's use some critical thinking just off of the surface. Palin is a first time governor and only for two years, in a state that ranks 47 in population. The only states with smaller numbers are North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming. Alaska does not even have one million residents, if you only count humans. Before this, she was a mayor of a small town. With this information, the Republicans had the audacity to state that she has had fiscal experience since she had to draft the State budget for two years along with military experience since she heads the Alaska National Guard. EXCUSE ME? How is any of this comparable to the US as a whole? Well she is a mother of five and was a hockey mom. She is a good Christian. Well, how does the good mother of five plan to divide her time as a good Christian mother between her children and helping to run a country. Her last child was born with Downs. She knew this ahead of time, but made the decision not to do anything to end the birth. I can respect that; however, she went back to work three days later. Is this a responsible mother with a special needs child? Any time women want to make any gains in maternity rights in the workplace, they will point to Sarah as a shining example of women who are warriors equal to men. On the other hand, where are those Christian family values people who believe the family unit in the most important thing. She left a special needs child to return to work, a child who would especially need his mother. She does not believe in birth control or abortion. Hmmm...she just had a baby, so we can guess she has not gone through menopause yet and surely that is a sign she and her oil rigger husband are still doing the wild thing on ocassion. Now let's think. Yesterday, McC turned 72. If he should have a stroke while in office, we will have a mother of five, potentially a mother of six or seven, with no experience for more that 700,000 people running a country with a populaton of 281,421,906, but that was in 2000 at the last census. Let me do the math here. Gosh, that is a whole lot of people the president is responsible for. I bet the federal budget is a wee bit more expansive than the budget of Alaska. Maybe, the US military services have a few more people than the Alaska National Guard, you think? Her son joined the military on September 11th. If my son, if I had one, did that during these times, I would kidnap him while dragging him to a deprogrammer or the Canadian border. She believes that the Adam and Eve story should be taught in schools. We have had almost eight years of being the laughing stock of the world, can we survive four more without imploding. The US was the greatest nation in the world; China is creeping up on our tail with their economic supremecy and they hold a giant bag of American dollars in reserve, as does Japan. If either decide to cash out, 1929s bank crash will seem like a walk in the park.

Voting

Many people who live abroad do not realize they can vote from anywhere in the world. It is simple to register through the computer in whichever US State you lived in last, or for those who have never resided in the US, there are states which will allow you to register in them. Some children of business or government members are now of age to vote, but may never have lived in the US. Everything you need to know is at www.votefromabroad.org/. When still living in California, I often heard people say is that they did not like standing in lines at the polling booths or some did not even know where they were to vote. The simple solution is what I did for each and every election. Sign up for an absentee ballot. You do not have to be away from home to use it and you vote is still as valid as all those who go to the machines to cast their ballots. If you have a transportation or time concern, this will take the pressure off. Just inform your local registrar's office in time to request it. Whether you are in NY, but vote in Kentucky, there is no excuse not to vote.

I Concede

It was a long time coming, but I concede. I was a staunch Hillary supporter; now it is time to cash in the chips and throw my support behind Obama. I do not have the optimism that some of my fellow Americans have in thinking this is a no brainer situation. After all, they reelected Bush/Cheney for the second time. Actually, they elected them the first time, four years ago. The Supreme Court elected them the first time around.
